>> two breaking news stories. penn state has been slammed with an unprecedented series of penalties by the n.c.a.a. today for its inaction when officials were alerted to a child sex abuse charges. first, the suspect in the colorado theater shooting makes his appearance in court.

good afternoon, everyone. the suspect in the colorado theater shooting makes his initial court appearance today. the 24-year-old is suspected of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in one of the worst mass shootings in u.s. history. >> making his first court appearance with dyed hair following friday's mass shooting, suspect james holmes appeared before a judge for what is being called an initial advisement. a decision on further charges and the ruling is expected later. it is the first real look the public has had at the suspect, who has been held in solitary confinement since been taken into custody within minutes of the shooting. until now, we have only seen his picture. as the community of aurora, colorado continues to cope with what happened, the mayor says

several maryland hospitals is accused of affecting -- infecting at least 30 people in a new hampshire hospital with hepatitis c. he is accused of stealing powerful and aesthetics, injecting himself, and then refilling the syringes with saline. they relate to use on patients. he worked at the baltimore veterans medical center, john hopkins hospital, and maryland general from 2008 until 2010. those hospitals will notify patients who might have been exposed, with instructions for follow-up. new rules go into effect today for abortion clinics in maryland. clinics will have to allow -- apply for licenses and will have to abide by stricter guidelines. the good news for anyone using public transit in baltimore city and county, transportation secretary ray lahood will be in baltimore later today to make a

>> covering the nation, 13 are dead and 10 are hurt in a single vehicle crashes in south texas. 23 people were crammed into a bed and cab of his pickup truck. when the loss control, it crashed into the tree. border patrol agents are working with the department of public safety to determine if the victims were illegal immigrants. police say they are not sure if the driver survived. meanwhile, an airplane lands on a california freeway after running out of gas. four people were in their plan as the airplane touched down. luckily, traffic was light and no cars were hit.

the airplane was headed for carlsbad. the world's largest aids conference began in washington today. researchers, doctors, and patients will push the world governments not to push back against the fight against the epidemic, which they say is that a turning point. researchers have yet to come up with a vaccine for the disease but say they have the tools to find the stem the spread of hiv. still to come, a new drug to treat cancer approved by the fda, and the safety investigation involving chrysler. and most of the phelps family going to london standing by michael phelps in his final olympics. his mother describes the feeling. >> a few thunderstorms possible this afternoon. you can see some of the developing out in the mountains. we will check out the forecast in a few minutes. first, a live look at the beach.

the middle portion of the week. typically, as we change air masses, you get some of the weather, and that might be the case today. you can see the clouds thickening up over the last couple of hours. starting to see some showers and thunderstorms pop up in the mountains. a cluster of storms coming across ohio right now. as we get into the afternoon, the storm prediction center believes there is a slight chance that we could see some severe weather if thunderstorms get going this afternoon. i think the best chance will be in pennsylvania and ohio. if we do get something, perhaps a large hail and thunderstorm. tune in later this afternoon for an update on the potential for severe weather. this afternoon, chance for a shower and thunderstorm. it will be warm and more humid over the weekend. the heat index will be in the

>> hiv patients may not be using medications to their fullest benefit, according to a new study. researchers at johns hopkins university studied blood sample for more than 30,000 patients infected with hiv and found a number of people who have suppress the virus by medication is 10% less than that thought. this is not controlling the virus levels in the blood could increase the chance patients will spread the violence. the fda has treated -- approved two new drugs designed to treat cancer. the new drug was approved with home mortgage -- hormone receptors positive disease. the drug was shown to be affected when tumors were shown to be resistant to traditional treatments. the drug successfully shrank tumors in 23% of patients who
